The Never Ending Rehab

Two houses, one sabbatical year of swinging hammers, and lessons learned in floors, kitchens, caulk, and lumber prices.

Scraping paint is NOT the fun part of owning a home.

Scraping paint

Ok, paint stripper is WAY too cool.

Bummer, underpadding stains not coming out of wood, looks like a dark finish is a must.

First coat of stain is on the floors. Very happy so far. Can’t wait to start painting so I can move in.

Got a little ambitious tonight and knocked out part of a wall.

Demolished wall

Last night when I demo’ed the wall in my house, I found a wad of crumpled up newspaper. The date: July 15th, 1947.

Considering how many years its been since I’ve wired up a patch panel, this ain’t half bad!

Finally going to finish the floor on the addition we did last year. Found a “wood” tile that matches surprisingly well!

The best part is how the vision I had in mind became real. Next, trim will go up on the exposed planter box framing.

The ethernet cable running out the door is going to get me in trouble with my wife. But you can’t argue with results.

In 4 days I am taking 1.5 weeks away from the computer, and remodeling my kitchen. I am both excited, and petrified.
1 day until kitchen remodel begins. Realized last night that we’ll be going from 12ft of counter space to 24ft!

This has been a ridiculous amount of work - but the kitchen remodel is nearly ready for tile floors!

Quite the thunderstorm today in San Diego. Which would normal just be awesome, but it’s really interfering with my whole kitchen remodel!
Finishing stages of the kitchen. Backsplash and window casings. This is the part of construction where I think, “thank god for caulking!”
First major release at job, baby due in 3 weeks, kitchen remodel, family illness. I’m going to have more gray hair than @POTUS soon..
So - after we gutted the one bathroom in our house, we’ve decided to scrap our original, flimsy plan. Don’t - Panic.
I’m renovating a whole house right now, and your hand built cabinets are making my IKEA kitchen plans feel rather sub par. All really amazing work. Can’t wait to see the next steps.
About to wire up a rental home I’m renovating, and am also more excited than I should be. More devices should use PoE.

3 months later, and fully living that blue collar life. Spending most of my days away from a computer, swinging hammers while rehabbing a house. So far, it’s been great for the soul.

Remodel in progress — bare studs and fresh work

I’m remodeling an entire house right now, and taking some months away from the keyboard.
"If you put in enough, you don't need wallpaper" — @CastIrony
This is true for houses too. Despite initial pushback during remodels, my spouse now totally agrees.
Even new houses are out of square AF! Caulk is the lord’s blessing.
"A coping joint is way beyond my pay grade." — @svenllama
No one does this unless you are building a fancy ass house - but base is “supposed” to have a coping joint, not a miter. Because, well, nothing is ever straight.
"You wouldn't believe how much hot glue I use in my projects, hidden just out of camera's sight." — @PossumDeMenthe
Honing my skills on the notion of “hmmm, is that good enough to hide with caulk?” If yes - Ship it!
I’m working on a remodel, and thinking of running APs and just covering whole house WiFi without the mesh.
Doing some circuit load calculations on a remodel, and I’m just so amazed at LED lights these days. I’ve got 12 fixtures on a circuit, and I’m at 40 watts. Each fixture is a 60 watt equivalent. A dozen lights in, and I’m using less power than a single old light!
I’m currently swinging hammers doing home remodeling. A little stop over to hopefully stave off permanent burn out.
P.s. remodeling an entire house is a ton of work, and 12 hour days at the office are a cake walk compared to 12 hour days on your feet.
I’m remodeling a house from the ground up right now, and added outlets behind the toilets just in case.
5 months later, and I’m still at it. Rehabbing a whole house is a ton of work! 12 hour days of physical labor are hard as hell compared to 12 hour days in an office. I also use Twitter a lot less, which I’m thinking is probably a good thing.
Went to buy some countertop slabs today, and they told me prices have increased 60-80% as a result of tariffs.

This house remodel I’m doing has a fun little nerd track - I ran cable and setup a network/coms box.

This little bracket I’m making took like 45 min to design, and 22 or so hours to print.

Current remodel. I’m a sucker for a wiring closet.

Anyone who’s ever put 8’ sheets of drywall in the bed should be able to appreciate how amazing it is to have no wheel wells back there!

I’m at the tail end of this never ending rehab project. It’s amazing what some paint can do.

"Took me six years to install the outlet and 20 minutes to install the bidet seat. Every bathroom should have toilet-level outlets, come on USA!!" — @cabel

Did a house remodel this year - all my friends asked me “why the heck did you put outlets next to the toilets?”

My trip to Japan last year may have been an influencer here.

Crown molding is not bones.

I did a remodel recently and we stacked boxes for the first time. I think it’s done in a sane way, but still not sure.

These aren’t quartz, and not the cheapest option but came from a countertop place for like $350 for two prefab slabs.

A friend shared before/after photos of their home renovation
I took some NASTY carpet out of my house to expose the original hardwood. One of the best things about houses of this time.
All these contractor-y skills I’ve picked up on my year off came in handy.
Coronavirus pandemic is incredibly poor timing for putting a rental on the market. But the house I spent last year rehabbing is finally available for rent.
It’s been a great project, and I’ve learned a massive amount. I did a massive amount of this full remodel myself.

My wife borrowed a sledgehammer from our friend - seems she had a plan in mind.

I took a year off tech and did a major remodel this last year. One day, I thought I had the floors dialed with my 4ft level - until my contractor came in and rolled his eyes at me. He came back with his 8 footer and showed me how many dips I’d missed. Stuck with me I guess.
A friend was asking about affordable flooring options
You can do some really nice vinyl plank flooring for ~$3/sqft material - probably $1-2/sqft installed. If it’s a rectangular room, and you feel mildly handy, it’s also very easy to install. Retrofit vinyl windows are pretty reasonable if you don’t need to change framing.

Removing baseboards is a great way to get a sense of the questionable design choices the previous homeowners made prior to quickly slapping new paint on the walls before selling.

Wall damage revealed behind removed baseboards

The surface the hinge sits against is the jamb, typically ~5/8 thick. If your screws are only attached here - well that’s a big part of your issue. Top hinge takes a lot of force - and needs at least one long screw that actually attaches to the 2x4 framing behind it.
  • 2x4 framing is the rough opening.
  • White material around door is the jamb.
  • A door with the white material and hinges etc. pre-installed, it’s a pre hung.
  • Just a door, it’s a slab.
  • Windows in doors are called “lights.”

Now you are a lingo pro when you call a carpenter.

I took a sabbatical from my tech job in 2019, and spent the year swinging hammers on a gut job renovation. Now I enjoy nerding out about iOS AND construction.

My wife and kids really went over the top for my Christmas gift.

I have been eyeing a new miter saw since my 10 year old saw bit the dust. Has been even more important since buying a new house needing a little work. This thing is a beast!

"The only gifts I want are wood working tools." — @sponno
Home remodel projects, mostly. Spent my year sabbatical from tech rehabbing a house. Bought a new one that needs lots of love.
My woodworking expertise is mostly limited to framing and trim for the time being. Those cabinets came from IKEA.
A friend was looking for a miter saw recommendation
My last miter was 10" and super cheap. I hated it, but I couldn’t convince myself to replace it. Then it conveniently broke. I don’t need the slider. But this one does bevel cuts both directions, and that is super awesome.

Weekend project - replacing the horrible carpet in the house we bought.

Removing old carpet from a house is disgusting.
I kept hearing lumber was normalizing. But …. no normal in sight.

Last time I remodeled a kitchen, my selection criteria for a range hood was “does it look cool”. That was dumb.

Now, my criteria is simply “can it suck enough air to extinguish candles burning in the house?”

This would be the most boring remodel in the world. More of a - lipstick on a pig. No new square footage, no layout changes. Trying to keep costs and complexity of this one down.
I use my iPad a lot when I’m doing remodel stuff. It’s amazing for snapping a photo, then marking up the photo with a pencil. Notes, measurements, etc.
A friend joked about buying a cheap $5 ladder
Have you seen lumber prices!? More like a $50 ladder!
Literally joked on my friend text this week “how do we buy futures in lumber? Would be better than the stock market.”
A friend was looking for a table saw recommendation
I have the DW745S, and am quite happy with it. It’s fairly portable, and I really like the pinion fence over the clamp fences on a lot of job site table saws.

Built a rolling cart for my miter saw today.

"Nice, that's a clever repurpose. And some fancy pocket holes" — @sasmith9t

I’ve never built a cabinet before, I’m pretty happy with it!

I learned - shelf pin holes are pretty easy if you use a scrap of peg board.

Wow. Never buy a range hood from Proline. Clear and utter contempt for customers. I was sent a dented and cracked hood. I’d waited patiently for months!

I ordered direct for swift delivery. Despite waiting on stocking and Covid delays, they refuse to make it right.

A friend was looking for tile and flooring sources

I recommend checking out some places like Floor & Decor or Lumber Liquidators. They have more options in similar price ranges, and a better product.

I’ve installed Home Depot flooring (it was fine), and LL flooring, and the latter was much much nicer.

I don’t know what this guy is doing. But he’s definitely not installing flooring.

A friend asked what tool was most essential for home projects
Table saw! Scariest tool I never knew I really needed until I had one. A contractor saw is pretty compact, and goes a long way.
I’ll take a job site saw (I have the DeWalt) over nothing. But my dad’s cabinet saw and large out feed table really does make me jealous on a regular basis.
Installing a bidet is about the easiest job there is (excluding fancy integrated units). Sure, call a plumber, but also maybe just make sure you remember “righty-tighty”, and that it’s not leaking when you are done.
